About German National Orchestra: Official partner of the Berlin Philharmonic

Age  Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult 18+

A blockbuster of a concert! And one that showcases every instrument in the orchestra – literally, in the case of Britten’s Young Person’s Guide. Britten turns the spotlight on each orchestral section in turn, then puts it all together in an incredible fugue to create a breathtaking climax. Holst takes us deep into the universe, giving the planets astrological characters and bringing them to life in cinematic technicolour with his masterly use of the orchestra. There’s pounding, militaristic Mars, The Bringer of War; Jupiter, The Bringer of Jollity; and Neptune, the Mystic, whose celestial chorus dissipates into the cosmos to leave us floating in space.

In between, is Gershwin’s Jazz Age masterpiece, Rhapsody in Blue. Wayne Marshall is a celebrated interpreter of Gershwin’s music who perfectly balances “the jazzman’s freewheeling, rhapsodic manner alongside a concert pianist’s formality” (Gramophone). With the superbly talented musicians of the German National Orchestra – official partner of the world’s most famous orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic – you can expect youthful high spirits, vital energy and impeccable playing.

Highly recommended for newcomers and old hands alike!
