Um/welt is a developing musical research project conceived by double bassist and composer Marco Centasso. Umwelt is a German word that corresponds to the Italian ‘environment,’ but literally means ‘surrounding world.’ The particular salience of this concept so expressed caused biologist Jacob Uexkuell to adopt it to denote the particular perspective of any organism as it relates to the world. In this way, each person’s Um/welt is not merely his or her environment, but his or her subjective universe, his or her horizon of interaction with the world, continuously determining and transforming the subject’s way of being, experiencing, and communicating in relation to the surrounding world.
