Any suggestion that British music has a ‘stiff upper lip’ would be rebuffed by Elgar’s passionate violin concerto, which was given the mysterious inscription ‘Herein is enshrined the soul of ....’ The CBSO’s leader Eugene Tzikindelean inhabits the enigmatic ‘soul’ of the piece in the soloist role.
