Get closer to the music

Audiences are invited to be part of something special this June in an immersive performance allowing you to get closer to the music than ever before. Grab a drink, take a seat on the Symphony Hall stage and allow yourself to be completely surrounded by sound.

In a rare performance of Bernstein's unfinished (and unpublished) free-wheeling ballet Conch Town from 1941, the audience are treated to instantly recognisable melodies made famous in West Side Story almost 20 years later.

40 years after writing Conch Town, Bernstein mentored student composer Michael Daugherty at Tanglewood, who was making ends meet as a Lounge Lizard by improvising cocktail jazz in bars and nightclubs in America and Europe for tips - which later became the inspiration for this piece. You'll also hear Barreau's evocative Blue Rain fizzes, a piece full of energy, ever-changing textures and combinations of instruments.
