About CBSO 2024/25: Brahms Sextet

Age  Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult 18+

Running time  This concert will last approximately 1 hour.

Brahms was one of the first composers to explore the relatively uncharted waters of the string sextet. Beethoven had left such a towering body of work when it came to the string quartet, that many composers, including Brahms, opted for the larger ensemble to avoid direct comparison.

Characterised by its exotic sound and harmonic interest, Brahms' Second Sextet is an animated work for strings, featuring a motivic depiction of the soprano Agathe von Siebold to whom Brahms was briefly engaged a few years earlier.

Witness the music brought to life by CBSO musicians in this afternoon performance at the home of the CBSO.
