Dubbed “the US’s best young songwriter” by The Guardian, Mitski has become one of the most compelling voices in contemporary music. The Japanese-American artist, based in New York City, blends indie rock with left-field synth pop to create songs that feel both intimate and expansive. Her lyrics explore love, heartbreak and the quiet disillusionments of modern life, often reflecting on identity and the pressures of capitalism with unflinching honesty.

Mitski’s live performances are as striking as her recordings. Known for their theatrical intensity, her shows frequently incorporate elements of Butoh, a hyper-controlled form of Japanese dance theatre. Through precise, deliberate movement and minimal staging, she transforms the concert space into something deeply expressive and almost ritualistic, drawing audiences into her world.

After announcing her retirement in 2019, many believed Mitski had stepped away from music for good. However, she returned in 2022 with the critically acclaimed album Laurel Hell, reasserting her place as a vital creative force. Around the same time, her songs found a new audience on TikTok, where they repeatedly trended and introduced her work to a younger generation of listeners.

Rough Trade will be presenting a special outstore performance from Mitski at Birmingham Town Hall on 13 May. This unique event celebrates the release of her new album, Nothing's About to Happen to Me, offering fans the opportunity to experience her singular artistry in an intimate setting.

Tickets will be available via Dice on Friday 20 Feb at 10am
