Gerry Marsden, who has performed at both Town Hall and Symphony Hall on numerous occasions as the frontman of Gerry and the Pacemakers, has sadly died today at the age of 78.
I can confirm that Gerry passed away this morning in Arrow Park Hospital on the Wirral. Myself and The Pacemakers are devastated at the sad news of the passing of Gerry Marsden MBE today, Sunday January 3,2021. Losing such a Legend, who was loved the world over, is never easy. We were all blessed to work with Gerry for many years. We send our condolences and deepest sympathies to his wife Paulene and the family at this very sad time. The band were one of the biggest success stories of the Merseybeat era, and in 1963 became the first to have their first three songs top the chart.
Ahead of performing at Symphony Hall in 2010, Gerry told the Birmingham Mail: "I love what I do. I love to sing and entertain. Every time I go on stage I get a great buzz and it’s the best feeling I can have apart from being with my family. I fish, play golf and jet-ski but nothing compares with performing on stage."
In 2019, Gerry hung up his guitar and to spend a well earned retirement with his wife Pauline and family after sixty years of performing. After retiring, Gerry gave his blessing to long time member of The Pacemakers, Tony Young, to continue the legacy of Gerry & The Pacemakers by touring as Gerry’s Pacemakers.
Gerry’s Pacemakers will perform some of Gerry Marsden’s massive hits including “I Like It”, “How Do You Do It”, “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, “Ferry Across the Mersey” and many more at Symphony Hall later this year.
