New Photography Exhibition Space Opens at Symphony Hall

B:Music is thrilled to unveil a brand-new photography exhibition space in the main entrance of Symphony Hall. This dedicated area will showcase the evocative work of local photographers, celebrating the creativity and community that thrives in our venues. Each season, we’ll feature a different artist, offering fresh perspectives and visual storytelling throughout the year.

Our inaugural exhibitor is none other than Garry Corbett, also known as Bluejazzbuddha. Garry’s striking black and white jazz photography has become a familiar and much-loved part of B:Music promotions. His generous contributions from Friday Jazz sessions have helped us capture the energy and emotion of live music in a way that words often cannot.

Garry shares:

“Over the years I’ve made thousands of photographs at the Friday Jazz sessions. I’ve photographed young musicians just starting their careers who are now middle aged and well established. I’ve got to know a lot of musicians personally.

The real bonus to doing what I do has been meeting and connecting with fellow jazz fans. I’ve made a lot of friends through my connection with Friday Jazz. A group of us currently meet up socially every Friday whether or not there’s music on. We have a Facebook group through which we share photos and information that might be of interest.

Over the years I’ve seen subtle changes in the audience demographic which has been a very positive thing. Likewise a change in the sweep of the music covered by the event. Jazz is what brought us together as an audience. Long may it continue to do so.”

Garry’s passion for photography began at age 10 with a Kodak Instamatic 50 gifted by his uncle. From there, his journey evolved through decades of camera upgrades, magazine publications, exhibitions, and awards. Though he’s been an Associate Member of the Royal Photographic Society and chaired his local photographic society, Garry now focuses on creating images that bring him personal joy rather than chasing accolades.

“Despite all of the above I do not believe photography to be a competitive sport. This competitive aspect of photography no longer has any appeal. My current aim is to make photographs which please me. Thankfully I do not have to make my living from my images.”

We’re honoured to host Garry’s work and invite you to experience his powerful imagery in person. The exhibition is free to view and located in the Symphony Hall entrance into B:Eats from Centenary Square. Please pop in to enjoy his work through to January or explore more of Garry’s work @bluejazzbuddha
