About National Youth Jazz Orchestra: A NYJO Tribute to Township Jazz

Age  Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult 18+

Born in the forcibly segregated South African urban townships during apartheid, Township Jazz blends traditional African music, Marabi, and Kwela with 20th century American jazz and is deeply rooted in the lived experiences of oppressed Black communities.

On the 90th anniversary of one of its pioneers, Abdullah Ibrahim (formerly Dollar Brand), NYJO pays tribute to this incredible music of celebration and protest, which combines political resistance with joy and community expression, led by Ibrahim’s long-term disciple and collaborator Pete Letanka.

The big band energy of swing and bebop, allied with African folk music and ragtime await you!
