B:Music & PRS Foundation Commission: Stories From The Front Room

This year we present the first of our commissioned artists, Tyriq Baker & Mukti Rana and their project ‘Stories From The Front Room’.

A project exploring the blend of South Asian (with East African roots) and Jamaican culture through Jazz, to tell a story that shows the impact that these two cultures have had, and continue to have on the history of the UK, and in particular, Birmingham and London. Within this fusion of cultural and musical influences emerges an entirely new sound; it is led by upcoming artists Mukti Rana and Tyriq Baker, who represent these two cultures. The aim of this

project is to create music that reflects the struggles, the languages and the stories of these two cultures and to bring the musical landscapes these cultures possess together as one. We decided to use the concept of the front room, as it is a space that shares cultural significance for Jamaican and South Asian families living in the UK, and is a place where stories, memories and experiences are shared.
