About Free Jazz Friday: Birmingham Jazz Orchestra

The Birmingham Jazz Orchestra is made up of internationally renowned musicians based in or associated with Birmingham, many of whom are key creative voices on the Birmingham music scene. The ensemble aims to showcase the composing and improvising talents of its members, as well as featuring guest artists. For this concert, they will be featuring original music from the renowned pianist and composer Nikki Illes.

Award winning jazz pianist and composer, Nikki Iles was a founder member of the innovative Creative Jazz Orchestra – working with Mike Gibbs, Vince Mendoza, Kenny Wheeler and Anthony Braxton. With a parallel career as a much loved and respected teacher, Nikki is Professor of Jazz Piano at the Royal Academy of Music and The Guildhall Music and Drama as well as giving masterclasses around the world. She has been a driving force behind the Jazz syllabus at the ABRSM exam syllabus and continues to publish with Oxford University Press.
