Thomas Adès: Forgotten Dances, for guitar

The first ever guitarist to be selected as a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist and a Gramophone magazine cover star, Sean Shibe is a creative force of nature. His questing spirit to explore, experiment and expand the repertoire has led to his own transcriptions of historical Scottish lute manuscripts, recordings on electric guitar of music from Hildegard von Bingen to Moondog, and a slew of new commissions for his instrument.

The centrepiece of his Spanish/French Camino is Thomas Adès’s first piece for solo guitar (‘Habanera’ from his opera ‘The Exterminating Angel’) which references a Spanish dance form seen through the prism of 20th century French ideas. Lady Margaret Wemyss’s lute pieces demonstrate continental relationships with the ‘Auld Alliance’ through pieces from Scotland as well as France and Spain, and there’s music by Couperin, de Falla and Mompou, whose Suite Compostelana is a homage to the Camino de Santiago.
