Already principal bassoon player with the WDR Sinfonieorchester in Cologne, Mathis Stier’s virtuosity and musicianship are beyond doubt. An accomplished soloist and chamber musician, he took home the second prize and coveted Audience Prize at the 2019 ARD Competition.

As a solo instrument the bassoon is among the least familiar to audiences, but Stier reveals a whole world of possibilities for this versatile instrument, from the courtly 17th century sonata of Böddecker and the rich and tonal sonorities of Saint-Saëns’s Sonata, to the contemporary sounds of Paula Matthusen’s work for bassoon and fixed media. Stier’s new commission for this tour is by Maria Sigfúsdóttir, an Icelandic composer and violinist whose band, amiina, toured and collaborated with Sigur Rós.
