About EBBF: European Composers Competition with Grimethorpe Colliery Band

David Thornton Conductor

Lucy Pankhurst Legacy

It's the final of the European Composers Competition! The event will see the famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band premiere three new pieces for brass band, created by some of Europe's very best emerging composers for the genre.

For the last half a century, Grimethorpe Colliery Band has had a reputation for repertoire innovation, through commissioned works, artist collaboration and daring programming. Showcasing new works is something the band relishes, supporting new voices and inspiring a new generation of composers. One of the most important dates in the band’s 2022 schedule, this event provides an opportunity to hear some truly groundbreaking and unique musical works for brass.

The evening will also feature a concert set from Grimethorpe, including Legacy, a euphonium trio by Lucy Pankhurst, performed by Dan Thomas, Glenn Van Looy and David Thornton.

The three finalists and their selected pieces for the European Composers Competition 2022 are:

  • Thibaut Bruniaux (France) - Insecurity
  • Théo Rossier (Switzerland) - Stendhal’s Syndrome
  • Andy Wareham (England) - Machiavelli - Ruminations on 'The Prince'
