About Celebrating Sanctuary: Refugee Week Takeover

Running time  Start: 2pm. Ends 5pm

Melisa Yıldırım & Swarupa Ananth
Anatolian kamancha fiddle player Melisa Yıldırım and Indian tabla player Swarupa Ananth created musical magic when they met in early 2022 during a OneBeat 9 residency in Florida and recorded a spontaneous and extraordinary album in one take, now released as Hues of Imagination. This month, the duo meet for the first time since that session to reconnect on stage as musical soulmates to explore where improvisation and inspiration takes both them and the audience. Melisa graduated from Conservatory of Music at Istanbul Technical University with first class honours, and Swarupa, who was mentored by percussion masters Ustad Allarakha and Zakir Hussain, has performed with her group Filter Coffee at Southbank Centre and Glastonbury.

Nifeco Costa & Babock Djazz

Nifeco Costa is a singer and guitarist from Guinea Bissau, West Africa, who came to the UK via Portugal, where he spent several years performing many events, festivals and making television appearances. Now based in the UK Nifeco has formed the band "Babock Djazz", bringing together local musicians with origins from around the globe. Nifeco brings beautiful melodies, a sweet voice and an infectuous Latin groove, guaranteed to get people dancing!

Krar Collective

The mighty Krar Collective serve up a mind-blowing feast of exuberant Ethiopian song and dance. Led by Temesgen Zeleke, student of jazz legend Mulatu Astatke, the band perform a contemporary take on roots and popular music, reflecting the diversity of cultures within Africa’s second most populous country. In the virtuoso hands of Zeleke, the six-stringed krar lyre becomes an ancient rock guitar, weaving around the stunning vocals of Genet Assefa, who had to run away from home to become a singer. The driving rhythms of Amare Mulugeta on kebero drums are the reason to dance, while Baby Masinko on the one-stringed Ethiopian masinko fiddle and Dawit Seyoum on bass krar add colour and funkiness.
