About Celebrating Sanctuary ft. Muntu Valdo (Cameroon)

Cameroon-born Muntu Valdo’s music is rooted in the blues, mixing African traditions with striking modernity and technical mastery. He’s travelled all over the world and played with some of the great names of African and international music including Ali Farka Touré, Manu Dibango, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Damon Albarn, Richard Bona and Lucinda Williams just to name a few. His mesmerizing solo set juxtaposes his raw, passionate voice and intensely emotive melodies, intricate African guitar lines with an ingenious use of loops and effects to create sun-kissed groove heavy Sawa Blues. Muntu Valdo is now firmly established on the live scene as a solo artist and has featured several times on Celebrating Sanctuary's programme, most recently at the Commonwealth Festival in 2022.

This is a special performance as part of the B:Music month long collaboration with Abbey Road Studios to celebrate the Annual Music Photography Awards. We have invited local and emerging talent from across the West Midlands to perform, immersed in the exhibition in the B:Eats café at Symphony Hall and all covering some iconic tracks recorded at Abbey Road in their own unique ways.
