In 50 years, the Brodsky Quartet have given over 3000 concerts and released over 60 recordings, and their natural curiosity and insatiable desire to explore different artistic directions is as sharp as ever. This unmissable project sees them join forces with Sir Willard White in an homage to the musical relationship and personal friendship between Frank Sinatra and the Hollywood String Quartet which led to their epoch-defining 1957 album Close to You. Jamaican-born bass Sir Willard White is one of the great all-round musical entertainers of our era, as dazzling when performing Songbook standards as he is on the stages of the world’s great opera houses.
“We have had so much fun putting together this inspiring collection of songs (in new arrangements by Paul Cassidy) and cannot wait to share them with you,” the Quartet says. And you can certainly tell. Expect pieces from the Great American Songbook, excerpts from Porgy and Bess, traditional folk songs from both sides of the pond, Barber’s evocative Dover Beach and a selection of Sinatra numbers from the album. And by way of a curtain-raiser, the Brodskys have a couple of quartet-only pieces up their sleeve too.
